New Work Toilets

I work in hospitality in a really run down building in Melbourne’s west. We’ve been told numerous times by the council to fix issues with the building, including tripping hazards and the state of our bathrooms. I’m not shocked by this in the slightest but apparently our bathrooms are both dangerous and unhygienic, to the point where the council have said point blank that we need a brand new bathroom or they will have to shut us down.

Unfortunately, my bosses don’t care too much about the health and safety of their staff and so I bet they’ll try and avoid getting anything fixed any time soon. I’m kind of used to it and I need the job so I unfortunately can’t complain to the council, as I’d be out of work if we got shut down. All of this is really unfair. I wish I didn’t have to feel in danger or disgusted every time I went to the toilet, but I guess it is what it is.

I wish I had the power to act on behalf of my bosses and just call the bathroom designers. Within Melbourne, there’d surely be some designers who know how to fix this mess. They’d probably be appalled at the state of the toilets, just like the council is, but they’d do their job regardless.

Sometimes I daydream about what it would be like to sit in a bathroom that was well maintained and hygienic to use. I assume I’m going to find out eventually, seeing as my bosses will only be able to hold off the council for so long. I wish I could find out today though. I’m sick of having to hold my breath every time I go to the toilet. I also feel guilty serving customers afterwards, even though I wash my hands more thoroughly than anyone on the planet. It still just doesn’t seem right.
